Hydrogen Project

This project was a lot of fun. We cut the plates by water jet, and the rest was done with the lathe and welder. The water is out of a tap and mixed with approximately 1/4 cup baking soda. The baking soda is used as a catalyst and allows the electricity to pass through the water separating it into hydrogen and oxygen. The power source used is a 12v motorcycle battery. It’s recommended to use a full size car/truck battery for best results.

Caution: If you are trying this at home, be careful not to drain the battery to low. This is known to case damage to the battery.

We collected the hydrogen with a 500ml plastic bottle then placed the bottle on a stick that was stuck in the ground. Took a lighter and flashed the flame by the mouth of the bottle. The hydrogen lit and the bottle went about 40 feet into the air. It was very impressive and lots of fun. The pictures below shows the unit off then switched on. You can see the hydrogen being produced and bubbling up. We then placed a lid on top and captured the hydrogen from the tube shown.

Caution: If you are trying this at home, be very careful! Hydrogen can be extremely dangerous.
